Popular messaging app WhatsApp has announced its active user base has grown to more than half a billion people and these users are apparently sharing some 700 million photos and 100 million videos every day. It has grown fastest in countries like Brazil, India, Mexico and Russia in the last few months. Last year in August, WhatsApp had 200 million users while the number doubled to 430 million in January 2014. WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum has revealed that it has 48 million monthly active users (MAU) in India, its single largest source of growth. The company has also more than doubled its India user base in about eight months. It had reported 20 million MAUs in August 2013 and 25 million MAUs in November 2013.
