In an effort to reduce cost and offer pan-India 3G services, Vodafone, Bharti Airtel and Idea cellular have started sharing their network to provide seamless service to their customers.
The three will now use each other's networks through inter and intra-circle roaming arrangements where they do not have licenses.
Bharti Airtel has already started sharing networks for 3G services with each other. For example, it does not have 3G network in Gujarat where it has started using idea’s network to provide service.
Airtel Aircel and Reliance communications each own a 3G spectrum license in 13 of the 22 telecom circle, while Vodafone has it in 10 circles and Idea and the Tatas in nine circles.
Idea has entered in to a intra-circle roaming argument with Vodafone for introducing 3G services in Delhi and Kolkata while Bharti airtel will partner idea in providing 3G service in Karnataka.
Vodafone has started 3G service in Andhra Pradesh and Kerala through an agreement with Idea. Utter Pradesh is another circle where Vodafone plane to introduce similar service through Bharti Airtel’s network.
Similarly, Bharti Airtel has entered in to intra circle roaming agreements to share idea’s 3G networks in Gujarat.
Bharti Airtel has bagged a 3G licence for Delhi and Mumbai metros besides Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Himachal Pradesh, Bihar, north east, Jammu and Kashmir and Assam.
Idea cellular hold 3G spectrum for 10 telecom circles-Maharashtra and Goa, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, UP, Punjab, Haryana and Kerala. Vodafone Essar had acquire 3G spectrum in 10 circles including Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.
